Rapid growth in internet shopping, changes in logistics practices, and varying goods movement requirements of different economic sectors, such as frequency of deliveries, sourcing, and distribution center locations are all affecting goods movement activity significantly. These large changes are impacting travel planning today and an agency’s ability to plan for tomorrow.
To address this, RSG now deploys rMove-based surveys in the freight and commercial vehicle market. These surveys directly address the shortcomings that freight and commercial vehicle surveys have faced in the past to improve freight modeling and planning. In 2016, RSG began a study for Portland METRO with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to evaluate how these data collection methods will help freight and commercial vehicle modeling and planning for the future. While that work is still ongoing, the opportunity to change freight planning has just begun.
